From NWSFA. Explains why some of our games have had the same ref for reserves and 1sts

Dear Players, Parents and Club Officials

Unfortunately, we find ourselves needing to communicate with you all about the increase in poor behaviour and disrespect shown towards Referees.  It appears that the goodwill and gestures of respect and gratitude shown during our Referee Appreciation Round are now a distant memory.

To date in season 2023 we have seen a significant increase of over 33% in send-off offences to the same time last season. This is simply not good enough!

As an association, NWSF run the very real risk of losing Referees to the game. We have already seen a number of Referees step away from their role this year due to the abuse that they have received. This will impact you – the players. Our previous exemplary Referee coverage has dropped to approximately 80% in 2023. This will only continue to suffer should we not all collectively take positive steps to put a stop to Referee abuse. Unfortunately, we are seeing many our Junior Referees being forced to endure unacceptable behaviour directed towards them. Abuse of young referees is child abuse – It is never acceptable and will not be tolerated by NWSFA.

Due to the serious nature and increase in incidences; increased penalties will apply for those charged with abuse of or inappropriate behaviour towards Referees. We will no longer default to minimum sanctions as has often been the case. We need to take proactive steps to ensure that people understand that this type of behaviour has no place in our sport.

Further to this, NWSF will Naming and Shaming the worst offenders. Again, we reiterate this type of behaviour has no place in our game. It needs to stop now!

Our younger and inexperienced referees, are still learning, they will make mistakes, and will have bad games - you would too if you took up refereeing for the first time - and we need coaches, managers parents and spectators to keep their mouths shut and live with these errors for the betterment of the game we all love

It is up to all of us to take positive steps to make change. We all have a role to play in setting positive examples of what is appropriate. We implore you to be proactive and help make the rest of the season be a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

I wonder

I've been wondering why there are so many referees doing both reserves and firsts. Spoke to a ref the other day and he was saying that if we gave a separate ref for both ressies and firsts, we wouldn't have any refs for the All Age comp.

I truly wonder whether referee abuse is actually as bad as what the association has made it out to be and I wonder how Prems fare compared to the rest of the comp? Back in the days, any Prems game on any given Saturday would have a guarantee red card in the match but I can't remember the last time a referee showed a red card particularly for fights or abuse.

It's a shame though that this is the case. Hopefully next season is a better year for referees
