How can we improve 35/1 as a comp?

Getting towards the business end of the season. The two teams that were thrown to the lions in 35/1, West Ryde and Normo, have found the going tough. Speaking only of the Rovers, I can say that we were not equipped for Div 1 and in fact asked for 35/2 which saw us finish 4th last season, way behind Normo. We recruited some good players (but not that many) and split last year's 35/2 team through necessity into the new 35/1 and 35/3 teams in order to incorporate all the players who were keen to play. A combination of season ending injuries, new Dads and general unavailability has left us vulnerable and very short on numbers, and 35/2 would have been a much more appropriate division for us. Not sure what sort of penant comp we're going to get, happy to join in the 35/2 penant comp to make it interesting, unless we can pull a great run together at the end.

Normo have had a tough year and the promotion to Div 1 has not done them any favours. The step from Div 2 to Div 1 is quite big, demonstrated by North Ryde's bizarre inclusion in Div 3 after playing 35/1 last year where they have romped to the top of the table and are way too strong for the division.

Would love to see Div 1 handled a bit better next season. If we're going to be forced to persevere in Div 1, then can we at least have eight teams in the comp to make it less lopsided, and can we also avoid having all of our 35s teams playing at the same time meaning we can't play players up when we're short. In fact can we have eight team divisions throughout until we get to the last division? Never understood why we would have more than one division having a bye, not fair!

Welcome any useful comment, but I do expect some crap to be posted as usual.

Div 1 is always a difficult division to fill as you suggest. The better teams don't enjoy smashing lesser sides and I'm sure the feeling is reciprocated by the teams being heavily beaten. There simply aren't enough good teams to fill the comp and the addition of the O/45's hasn't made the situation any better. Teams have also gone to all age to avoid Div 1 in the past. There is nearly always a weak team or two in Div 1. The reality is that this year it is a two team comp with Eastwood having a great run to romp to the top. That said, the finals might be interesting.

Tex, Are 35's able to get AA players (obviously that are 35+ years old) to fill in when needed ?? may/may not help with quality, but could help with numbers

Hi Tex, The same issue now applies in 45/1s. There has been talk of GHFA, NSFA (Kuringai) and Manly forming a combined 45/1 comp to combat the fact that each comp has between 1 to 4 strong teams and the rest making up the numbers. There is no talk at this stage of doing the same in 35/1. I dont know if the other associations have the same issue in 35/1. If nothing comes of that idea, the other thing they could do is to make 35/1 an 18 or 20 team comp. Play each team once. It could be our version of the EPL. Only 3 or 4 teams look favourites at the start of the year, but then someone might do a Leicester.

We are enjoying the challenge this year despite the fact we haven't won a game Agree that 8 teams should be enforced as at least we would have had a chance at a few wins We hope that we have given everyone a game as we have given our all and don't give up at any stage A win just around the corner would not surprise us!

Normo, What you say is spot on. While the score line against us didn't look the best, you guys made us work for it up until the end.

They always insist on things BUT knows nothing. not progressive.

Hey Tex,

Here's another way you can improve 35/1. Next time you put a team together, leave out Martello, Liberatore, and Volpato. They were at their disgraceful "best" on the weekend.

You'll be doing everyone a favour, including your own team.

Absolute muppets!!

Who did they play and what did those three boys do to deserve such a spray? Sour grapes.

How did the little one pull up after that bad fall Tex?

Hey Gio, like you say mate, hard as nails. As if it never happened. Bit of a trap for young players though that massive step. Thanks for everyone's concern as it was a hard hit and she still has the massive bruises on her elbows! See you in a couple of weeks. cheers Tex

Oh dear, sour indeed. I've definitely heard feedback from the other side of the fence. Conclusion is that there was a great deal of muppetry on display from both sides. I've never heard of a player hiding the spare match ball in his bag to waste time... Tell me that's not being a muppet.

Isn't that just playing smart Tex? Whats the difference to some muppets who kick the ball away and waste time that way. do what you need to do to collect the points i say!
