Pleased to say there were no bad tackles and a fair few jokes and it seemed like only a couple of little 'strains' per side in the injury department after the game. The EEW boys had 2 out from their regular starting XI and a few reserves on the bench. We (PEN) played with 11 men which included a mate from ASH's 35s, so we weren't cohesive and we didn't look good at all! Absent were Kurt, Pa, Collosimo, Nath and Gio, so I guess not having our regular sweeper, 2 central mids and 2 strikers, it was never going to be too much more than an exercise in maintaining fitness. As far as our 'cattle' was concerned (for the sake of my teammates) I should never play 90 minutes! We wish EEW well in COC

Over 45's looked the better side and the Pennant Hills side had at least 9 blokes who started in the GF side against Redbacks in the starting line up against EEW. I stated previously that it was a very scrappy game and the intensity was kept at a minimum on purpose, but I would say - in my opinion only - that with 2 full teams, with 3 points up for grabs, I would back PEN to get the chocolates. Just my opinion based on 5 very key players/positions that were missing. I have played against the core of that EEW team for about 20 seasons now, and they weren't missing anyone of note from last year's team. Maybe next year we will see who would win, as the EEW boys were forthright in sharing how annoyed they were at having half the season lost to teams forfeiting against them.

I played for EEW, no doubt Penno would have obviously been much much stronger with the stars in and would have won. It was a game that EEW should have won comfortably. But really it was a nothing game, particularly for Penno given their line up. Penno had no reserves and a couple of ring ins. Christie never brings out the best in many 35s or 45s teams. We hate playing on it, just too bloody big. That said, when we played the COC first round there last year against Apia Tigers (one of the favourites) we actually came over the top of them in the second half. That match fitness we had then is nowhere to be seen this year. We should have even won the COC semi final, played on a 45 degree day which I rated equal to the hottest I'd ever played in, unfortunately we conceded 2 goals in the last 7 minutes to lose 5-4 against South Etalong. They didn't have a player over 45, we only had one under 45, with 4 starters over 50 and one of those Richy a grand dad!!! The only player missing on from last season's team the other night was our most mobile player in Mick Richards, he makes a pretty big difference for us. Dependable stopper shagger's back Bruno was a no show as well. I've seen Penno play this year and they were pretty good, but not as good as Apia or South Etalong. So with a fit squad I'd give us a half decent chance against this years Penno. Surprising to me they struck trouble against Redbacks a few times, Kurt must have been missing. We usually had the spider's measure, even notching up an 8-1 last season against their full strength squad. Toss was on fire that day. It was on a small pitch at Meadowbank and we carved them up, the next day we played a wash out catch up at the horribly big View St and could only manage a narrow win. But next season will be different story again with Penno pencilling in more new quality starters! TBH I'm not sure we want to go back to the injury rates of a 35s comp. With half our starting team beyond fifty, 0/45s should be our go. Our knees have earnt it.

A bit of state league for a few but mostly PL was where the core played. Toss has been there from the beginning and is one of the best to play in the GHFA without question. He could have been anything is the usual opinion of others. Without him EEW wouldn't have been the force they've been throughout the past 20 odd years. EEW have also had the smart football brain of Whitey to player coach for quite a few years now. He played and coached at Melita. Hunters Hill went on to win the COC, WWR somehow lost its COC final 7-5.

This was a game for match fitness and only that with a few players from both feeling a few little twinges after a good hit out hence it stopping a little short. I will say eew has some good structure and every player knows there zones and limitations which they play to most of the time. Penno would be very similar when at full strength. That is what sets a good side apart from an average team who only have a few options. Yes, eew dominated good parts of the game but were found out a few times with some quick counter attacks on a bouncy pitch which we all saw when a ball was being cleared by the eew keeper. Penno also had good patches through the game and a few chances towards the end. A big thanks to the ref as well who put his hand up and didn't have to use his whistle much at all which shows the spirit of the game Good luck to both sides in the COC and also Kenthurst in the AAM. Not much you can read into a trial between two masters teams. The over 35's and 45's CoC is fascinating. I find the football good to watch as the teams play a possession game and usually have played together for years. The slower speed makes for a more patient build up. Nothing levels a playing field more than a loss of speed. Here you start to see how good someone's technique and vision are. Here goes some sort of review. In the Over 35's Penno play Sydney Juniors or Sydney Croatia. A side that has ben together for years. I see they beat Canley Heights to the gong. Canley Heights are a team of ex-futsal internationals who once played for Smithfield RSL. Canley Heights made the State Cup final last season so Sydney Juniors cannot be too bad. SDSFA is a mixed bag and you don't know what to expect. In the 1980's they had some tidy premier league sides now defunct in Fogular Furlan and Liverpool Albion. Kellyville are there again. They won it last year. A big and tough team complete with two of the four Foxe brothers. Kellyville were for some time a decent federation team. I saw them all on the cans at a Sydney FC game. Good comeraderie there. APIA lost to EEW last year. They are a side I have seen play a few times this year. They are strong all over the park with many ex-NSL players. John Buenovoglia is one. They prepare exceptionally well and have something close to a proper warm up. I also see Pittwater RSl are in the mix. They were strong in Premiers about ten years ago. I worked with a guy who played for them and he was/is the fittest most flexible person I have ever met. If this is the same side, like EEW they know what to do. This leads me to the over45's where Epping should go a long way. Last year Cronulla RSL were head and shoulders above the rest. I watched both the semi and the final they won 5-1. They had a great blend of skill, strength and mobility. Notice I did not say speed. Also they had Pedro Ricoy who played forever for St George and APIA in the '80s. Lilli Pilli have beaten them to the task this time around. Sutherland is a handy comp when you think Como and Engadine also make up the numbers. The two teams I see posing the biggest threat are West Pymble and Panania. West Pymble dominated KDSA for years. They are a tough and aggressive side. They won the 35's state cup in 2011. The Advocate said they were super fit. Panania, like West Pymble, dominated Bankstown for years alongside Greenacre, East Bankstown and High Flyer- don't you love that name. If this is the same team they are strong at the back, mobile in the middle with Dario Portofino, with a couple of game breakers up front. Panania knocked EEW out of the state cup in 1993 0-1. I am also familiar with Inter Lions. I saw them beat my club Balmain in the GF at Pratten Park a couple of weeks ago. Sadly for Balmain they were missing their two Michael Richard's and suffered as a consequence. No mobility. Inter are an old side - for a over 45's side - however have played with each other forever. They defend to narrow and without depth for mine. There was however a fastish guy up front who caused a lot of problems. At the masters level so much is about recovery, conditioning and strength. You assume that by this stage technique is in the bag. I suspect the teams that win have the most favourable run with injuries, weather, extra time and conditioning. Whilst EEW did not play many games this year the old distance runners adage may apply, you are better to enter a race underdone rather than overdone.

Lilli Pilli 45s didnt beat Cronulla RSL, RSL won 18 from 18 and beat LP 3-1 in the grand final. Like EEW, RSL had a lot of forfeits this season and pulled the pin on CofC this year. Lilli Pilli have taken their place. In 35's, If Penno get past Sydney Juniors they play the winner of NthBridge v Glenwood. Northbridge won it 2 years ago, however last year all their players were in Turin playing the world masters games. Glenwood Redbacks are the old ASH Croatian 35/1 team plus David Zdrilic and Zeljko Kalac, although I hear Kalac doesnt play keeper.
