With both teams observing a minutes silence for one of the GHFA's fallen, the crown could sense there was something special about to open up. The once the referees whistle blew, it began. WPH in their traditional white, red and blue and the hawks in their green and white started at a frantic pace. Both teams made a nervous start with passes being mistimed and balls being overrun. Was it the nerves or the beautiful layer of mist across the artificial Christie surface? One of the Hawks veterans turned the ball over close to half way, and bang Big Bad Kane(BBK) pounced on a sniff of a chance and broke away from the defender and the deadlock netting comfortably in the top left hand corner. A sense of relief from the WPH supporters who were not used to being held to a draw within the first 10 mins of a game, yet frustration from the Hawks bench as BBK so frequently opened them up the prior 2 seasons. To the hawks credit, they didn’t go back into their skins as they may have in previous season, however the side from Campbell park kept coming, dominating the middle with physical strength led by their long haired midfielder. This lead to Jack and the Bean Stalk(WPH) getting through the backline once more only to be brought down on the touch of the 18 yard box. WPH really did struggle from their free kicks with what can only be described as a lack of execution rather than a lack of opportunities. The veteran left back for WPH seemed eternally open, however balls failed to be delivered to his luscious left peg and chances went missing. The Hawks then made a series of attacks and was lucky to go without a penalty as Big Tony(shall be referred to as BT) waived play on to the hawks disgust. Then a series of changes were made by both benches as the squad began to tire. This did wonders for the Hawks as their striker Grey Goose(GG) beat both keeper and defender in the air and levelled the scoring at the 35 min mark. Both teams going into the interval locked as 1-1. The crowd grabbed a quick sausage roll from the canteen and those you brought their eskies stocked them for the second half’s entertainment. Both sides looked similar coming out of the shed, however the hawks brought on Jail Bait( JB ) up top to “spice things up”. Hawks started on top in the second half creating quite a few chances in the opening 15 mins, but as they began to tire and the WPH bench made its first change, they began to open up their left edge and BBK netted for a second time in the match. 2-1 WPH restore their lead! It looked like WPH would take it and run with it as the saying goes, but as we all know in the GHFA, it’s not done till it’s done. STA learnt their lessons last season, and know this only oh too well. Young Blondie( YB ) for the hawks was looking dangerous with his nipping around the WPH backline and he linked up with JB a few times before a wonderful save from the WPH #1 aka Sticky Fingers(SF). It was pretty clear that BBK was on a mission as he opened the hawks up once more, only to be shut down by a “large” challenge by the hawks #3, this lead to a counter attack and a preciously delivered ball onto YB’s head left SF with no chance other than to pick the ball out of his empty goal, leveling the score at 2-2. 2-2 and all to play for with about 20mins left on the Empty Clocks @ Christie Park. (on a side note, why were the score boards and the timers not being used? Power saving??) It was tense, and both teams were down on all fours crawling for the finish line, but it was WPH who spent most of the time on the ground with BT blowing about 10 fouls in a row for what can only be described as questionable dives from where I was sitting. Holy Issac,(HI) the son of Moses went down at least 5 times in the space of 10 mins with any kind of human contact. It was clear that this man needed a drink and a rest. With the hawks supporters growing restless and the hawks / wph bench exchanging a few kind words of sportsman ship, finally BT broke the drought and blew a Hawks free kick. Only 5 mins of normal time left, and both coaches paced their technical areas and made a few last minute changes. The tension was reaching fever pitch as we saw the premiership contenders being pushed for the first time this campaign. Who was going to break? Was it the classy WPH for the rejuvenated Hawks outfit? With the hawks being disposed in possession deep into the WPH half, it saw a break away for BBK, but another great challenge from the hawks defenders saw the ball being pummeled into the WPH half and the newly subbed hawks striker finishing the hardest chance of the match off the post and into the net. 3-2 Hawks. The last 3 mins, saw WPH hit the bar which should have really gone in, and a top class save from the hawks #1 who looked very comfortable under the high balls. BT blew full time and half the crowd erupted, with the other half shell shocked. Hawks victorious 3-2 in a cracker, well worthy of a final in any PL comp.

Thanks Holy Grail. What a great write up you should do this for the rest of the year. Sticky fingers and Young Blondie don’t they go together.
